Root canal treatment, also called Endodontics, is offered when the nerve is infected through decay or injury. It is a common dental procedure performed to eliminate pain caused by infection. After the root canal treatment, patients will be able to keep their own teeth without infection and pain.
In most cases, multiple appointments are required to remove all the infected nerve and blood vessels inside the tooth. Local anaesthetic will be given during the procedure and should feel no different to having an ordinary filling.
The aim of the treatment is to remove all infection from the root canal and fill the space with sterile materials. In some situations, if the tooth has been heavily restored before, a crown will be recommended after the root canal treatment.
